There used to be a guy. Sweet and innocent. Never misbehaved. Goodness personified. One day his little brother came home crying. It broke his heart. His brother was playing with his friends when an argument started and they ended up fighting. Seeing his little brother cry enraged him. He went out and thrashed the others for hurting his brother.
It may not be the best option but that made him feel happy. Rather, he felt justified
Today you calm your soul by saying that violence is to defend you and your family. Tomorrow its to defend your caste, creed, religion. Soon its to defend your country. Your ethnicity. If we take a giant leap with our imagination, as sci-fi movies do.. You try to justify your violence saying its to protect mankind or to protect your planet. As admirable as the sentiment is to own something or some one and to stand by what you own, its equally scary when you look it at from the other person's perspective. A point comes in your life when you are forced to look at it from the opposite end. That's the moment you can realise how grotesque your sentiments were. But dear friend, don't rush to the conclusion that you were the wrong one and the other was right. It is never so. There is never an absolute right nor an absolute wrong. World, my friend, is not painted in black and white. It is painted in fifty shades of grey (pun intended).
As a famous quote says.. "There is your perspective, my perspective and then the truth".
True that we can't all be saints. But we can try to look from other's perspective. More so try to do that, when the other one has hurt you or something you value. When you start doing that, there will be no more intolerance. Change starts with you!
Psst.. Ahem, don't stand by and let yourself get hurt. Defend. But don't hurt others and later justify it.
